June 8th marked the official opening of the High Line and since then the park has had over 100,000 visitors. The High Line gives tourists a chance to explore the city without the intrusion of cars. The view is especially spectacular for photographers who have a passion for capturing new perspectives of New York City.

The elevated tracks were originally built in the 1930’s by the New York City Railroad company and were a part of the West Side Line. The railroad tracks eventually became a sore to look at when wild grass and trees took over after it was was abandoned in the 1980’s. The line gradually turned into an eerily beautiful place and was on the road to being completely torn down. Residents from the neighborhood eventually campaigned to have it turned into an elevated park with benches and chairs for visitors to relax on, newly planted trees and flowers, and places for people to eat and drink.

Great photo! This is one of the best new public spaces created in New York in a very long time.
What really impresses me is the different perspective you get from up there while looking at the cityscape. I’m looking forward to the completion of the second segment next year!
